Our History

Kuskokwim Community Church has a long history of serving Bethel and the surrounding region, dating back to the 1960s. Formerly known as Bethel Community Assembly of God, the church has faithfully proclaimed the gospel, made disciples, equipped people for ministry, and created a place for people to encounter God. For generations, it has been a community where people have gathered to worship and grow in faith.

Following a pastoral transition, our church entered a season of prayer, reflection, and conversation. As we sought God's direction together, we recognized a growing desire to strengthen our connection to the people and communities of Western Alaska. The transition from Bethel Community AG to Kuskokwim Community Church reflects more than a name change. It reflects our commitment to following Christ together and serving the region God has called us to love.

Our Mission

At Kuskokwim Community Church, our mission is simple: Following Christ Together.

Following: Among the peoples of Western Alaska, following has long been a way of learning and growing through watching, listening, participating, and learning alongside others. Following Jesus is similarly relational. It is a way of life learned and lived, not simply something we know.

Christ: Everyone is following something. As a church, we believe Jesus Christ is the one we choose to follow. He is our True Elder, the one whose life, teachings, and ways shape how we live, love, and relate to one another.

Together: We believe faith was never meant to be lived alone. We need one another as we learn to follow Jesus, encourage each other, and grow in faith.

As we worship, learn, serve, and share life with one another, we grow as followers of Jesus and help others do the same. Whether you are just beginning your faith journey or have followed Jesus for many years, we invite you to join us as we follow Christ together.

Our vision is to see Christ-following communities growing throughout Western Alaska, with people following Jesus together through worship, discipleship, healing, and meaningful relationships. We believe that as people learn and live the ways of Jesus together, the gospel brings hope and transformation to individuals, families, communities, and generations.

At Kuskokwim Community Church, ministry isn’t built around one pastor or personality. We believe God gives different gifts to different people, and the church is healthiest when we serve, lead, and grow together.

Our pastoral team shares the work of caring for people, teaching Scripture, developing leaders, and helping our church follow where God is leading, but ministry doesn’t stop with the pastoral team. We believe everyone has something to contribute. Together, we serve our community, care for one another, use the gifts God has given us, and participate in what God is doing throughout our region.

Our hope is that as we follow Christ together, each of us grows in our ability to worship, serve, lead, make disciples, and help others follow Jesus. In this way, healthy Christ-following communities can grow, not only within KCC, but throughout Western Alaska.

Our Way of Being

Family: We value shared life as we become a spiritual family across generations. (Hebrews 10:19)

Bible-Based: We value understanding, believing, and living out God’s Word. (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

A Spirit-Led Life: We value the empowerment of the Holy Spirit for life and ministry through the gifts and fruit of the Spirit. (Acts 2:4; Galatians 5:25)

Culturally Meaningful: We value the unique cultures of Western Alaska and desire to connect all people to following Christ in culturally meaningful ways. (Revelation 7:9)

Humility: We value listening, learning, and growing with humility. (Psalm 25:9)

Spiritual Formation (Discipleship): We value growing in faith and passing it on to others. (2 Timothy 2:2)

Healing: We value walking with people toward spiritual, emotional, physical, and relational healing with God and others. (Psalm 147:3)

Regional: We value connecting communities to Christ and one another throughout Western Alaska. (Acts 1:8)

Multiplying: Following Jesus leads us beyond ourselves to our neighbors, other villages, and ultimately the nations. (Matthew 28:19–20)

We are deeply grateful for the pastors, elders, leaders, and church family who have faithfully served through the years. Their prayers, sacrifices, and commitment to Christ helped build the foundation we stand on today.

We also honor those who have called this church home at different seasons of life and have been part of its story. As we look to the future, we are thankful for the opportunity to steward the next chapter of ministry and all that God has in store for our church and our region as we follow Christ together.
